I peer into the dark…

I peer into the dark, looking for the faintest shimmer of light that I know is not there. hoping against hope I strain my senses to find that little sign of life that will show me and my companions that the journey has not been in vain… But I see nothing.

Tired and defeated I sit with the others, waiting, remembering those moments in our journey that were full of light and laughter, those moment when we frolicked and enjoyed countless victories and though ourselves invincible.

Those moments are now long gone. We are cold, hungry, alone… but it is the darkness what has affected us the most. not the chill in our bones or the pain in our bellies, but the darkness that surrounds us, weakens our spirit and robs our courage.

We all have heard the stories about this place, they were meant to scare little children, not battle hardened men, they were supposed to be the figment of some old woman’s imagination, not real. But we all have found far too late the hard truth, the darkness is real, and so is the terror hiding behind it, none of the men has seen it, but we all can feel it, smell it, touch it…

Again, I stand and look into the dark, looking for the faintest shimmer of light that I know is not there…
